A running list of the tools I’m currently using.

Workflow

Fedora Workstation — my OS of choice on both laptop and desktop. Reliable, up-to-date, and stays out of the way.

Firefox — browser. Far from perfect, but at least it’s not chromium based.

Brave Origin — privacy focussed browser. Trying it out (Linux version).

Thunderbird — email. Does the job without drama.

Obsidian — notes. Not open source, but it’s just that good.

Folio - A simple, open source markdown note-taking app.

Planify - Open source task manager.

LibreOffice — documents and spreadsheets when I need a “what you see is what you get” office suite.

Zotero — my “research library” manager.

Development

Positron — for data, research, and all my text editing these days.

Zed — my editor for everything else. Fast and minimal.

Git — version control. The obvious choice.

Forgejo - self-hosted lightweight software forge.

Hugo — static site generator. Powers this blog… and all of my websites.

Graphic Design

GIMP — image editing.

Inkscape — vector graphics.

Scribus — for when I need to put together something that has to look like a real document: posters, booklets, that kind of thing.

Homelab

Ubuntu Server — runs the homelab. Boring and stable, which is exactly what I want for that purpose.

Home Assistant — home automation. Runs locally.

Docker — keeps everything contained and reproducible.

Tailscale — connects everything together securely without opening ports.

Nextcloud — file sync and calendar. It just works.

Jellyfin — media server for video and music.

Audiobookshelf — for my audiobooks. It must be the app I use the most.

SearXNG — self-hosted metasearch. My default search engine for two years now and counting.
